MUSES Convo with: Sofie Shamel, Danish artist based in Portugal

Sofie, can you tell us a little about yourself and your life as a Danish artist in Portugal?

Sure! So, I’m originally from New York, but I grew up in Copenhagen—my mom’s Danish, and my dad’s American, so I’ve always felt connected to both cultures. I’m 33 now, living in Portugal with my partner and our daughter, and life here has been such an amazing blend of creative inspiration and family life. As an artist, Portugal’s been a great backdrop for my work—it’s got this calm, reflective vibe that I really connect with and the nature here is stunning.

Motherhood Experience: How has being a mother changed the way you think about your art?

Motherhood has definitely changed my perspective on art. After becoming a mom, I felt this deep shift—not just in how I viewed the world, but also in my sense of responsibility. That’s when I made the conscious decision to pursue art more seriously. I wanted to show my daughter that our passions aren’t just something we fit in after everything else, but something we can truly prioritise and cherish. By committing to my creative work, I realised I wasn’t just doing it for myself, but also to model the importance of carving out space for what matters most. It’s become such a fulfilling way to show her that following what you love is something worth making time for.

Pregnancy Reflections: Looking back at your pregnancy, what were some special moments for you? How did your clothing choices affect your experience?

Wearing clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident is so important when pregnant and the first months postpartum. As women this is a transformative time physically, emotionally and spiritually and we deserve to feel good about ourselves. What we wear is one way we can support that trajectory.

Wearing BumpMuse: How does it feel to wear a BumpMuse style now that you are not pregnant anymore?

I love it! I truly think it's a beautiful design that honours the female shape and is very comfortable to wear. Female bodies change constantly and having clothes that can fit our changing bodies is game changing!

Sustainable Fashion: Why is sustainable fashion important to you, especially as a mother?

Sustainable fashion is really important to me, especially as a mother, because I want to leave a better world for my daughter. It’s about being mindful of the impact we have on the planet and making choices that reflect the kind of future we want for our kids. By choosing sustainable options, I feel like I’m contributing to something more meaningful—not just in terms of reducing waste, but also in teaching my daughter the value of thoughtful consumption and respecting the environment. It’s a small step, but I believe it makes a difference, and it’s something I want to pass on to her.

Personal Connection: What does it mean to you to be one of our MUSES for BumpMuse? How do you feel about representing a brand that celebrates motherhood?

It’s such an honour to be one of the muses for BumpMuse! As a brand that celebrates motherhood, it feels really special to be part of something that understands the beauty and strength in that experience. Motherhood is such a transformative journey, and to be able to represent a brand that not only acknowledges that but also uplifts it, feels incredibly empowering. I love that BumpMuse celebrates the real, raw aspects of being a mom, and I’m proud to be a part of a community that embraces that in such a beautiful way.

Advice for Expecting Mothers: What advice would you give to moms-to-be about choosing preggo clothing?

Prioritise getting a few pieces in good quality that can follow your journey through pregnancy and motherhood.

Future Aspirations: What are you excited about in your journey as a mother and an artist? Do you have any upcoming projects you are looking forward to?

I’m really excited about how my journey as a mother and artist continues to intertwine and evolve. Motherhood has added so much depth and perspective to my work, and I feel like I’m constantly discovering new layers of emotion and creativity because of it. I love that my art can grow alongside my daughter, and that I’m able to explore themes of connection, vulnerability, and nurturing in new ways.

As for upcoming projects, I do have a few things in the works that I’m really looking forward to!
